Senator Sanders seeks halt to second half of Wall St rescue

A senator on Monday said he will introduce a bill to stop the release of $350 billion in the second round of funding for a massive Wall Street bailout program. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent who usually votes with the Democrats, voted against the $700 billion program approved by Congress in October and enacted by President George W. Bush to stabilize the financial system. Sanders, a democratic socialist in a nation where that is rare, criticized how the Bush administration is spending initial funding already released. "I have very serious concerns as to how the Bush administration is spending the first $350 billion they were provided. The second $350 billion tranche must not be spent in the same way," he said in a statement.

  2. #2    If Congress blocks the rest of the bailout package, how are the Wall Street Thieves going to get the rest of their bonuses?

  3. #3    Obama and Biden support the bailout, as do Pelosi and Reid and the rest of the D leadership, and the vast majority of Ds in the House and Senate. Sorry, Bernie.

  4. #4    Should we be rewarding failure in New York or Chicago? I only ask in order to play devils advocate. Well done Bernie Sanders. Perhaps even Paulson is not in a rush to spend, spend spend the next $350 billion.
It is time for politicians to stand up and be counted. It is fine for the Bush Administration to close the door on its way out, but the debate is being characterized as being between the White House and the Democrats - including Obama. Where are the Republicans?
Just think for a moment - how quickly were the taxes paid by Chrysler more than the cost of bailing out the company.
I am not sure I can afford the lofty ideal of free markets in this economic climate. Let the big three go an...

  5. #5    All this talk about the bail out (welfare) and no one is talking about repayments. Now, just why would they want all that money and no one able to check on them, investigate where it was used or how? Because they KNOW it is just one more attempt to steal fromt the poor and give to the greedy.

Hey guys, you are all going to give me all your money (for good works), but you aren't allowed to ask what I'm doing with it. You wouldn't go for it, so why did the asshats in government? Because they are benefiting from it too.

  6. #6    The looting will continue unabated under the Obama/Pelosi/Larry Summers/Ben Bernanke administration. Too bad Bernie, Dennis K, and Ron Paul can't put their heads together and form truly progressive Senate and House caucuses.
