How Sarah Palin blew it - Joan Walsh

There were two key moments for me when Sarah Palin blew it badly. One was substantive, one was symbolic. The substantive was her bizarre statement about being happy that Dick Cheney had expanded the powers of the vice-presidency, and wanting to expand the powers more. Biden came back with a decisive: "Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president in American history," and he defended the existing limits on vice-presidential power. Point: Biden. Big time. The symbolic moment Palin flubbed was subjective, of course. But I instant-messaged a friend that she lost the debate when Biden choked up over losing his wife and child in a car accident in which his sons were critically injured -- and she went straight back into "John McCain is a maverick." I truly expected her to express human sympathy with Biden, and her failure to do so showed me something deeply wrong with her. But maybe that's just me.

  1. #1    I agree on both points. The Veep comment was a huge gaffe, one that I think is going to loom larger and larger. And her tone was in general nasty and mocking, her attitude egotistical and self-absorbed.

Did my fellow Americans see it the same way I did? I don't know. But I don't think they can have missed it.

  3. #3    She might be OK as a grade one teacher; she does kind of remind me of one.

  4. #4    "Hey, can I call you Joe?."
Obviously she wasn't being chummy when she asked Biden's permission to address him in a more familiar manner. This was a setup so that she could later deliver her "say it ain't so, Joe" remark. As for the debate, 90% of the time she was on attack mode, the other ten she was babbling some prepared talking point. She didn't make any major mistakes, but she came across as mean-spirited, shallow and vacuous. I've seen these latter traits in most of the people (especially the females) who engage in competitions on reality shows (which is why I can only take 10 minutes - at the most - of watching these shows.) And it's not pretty.

  5. #5    Palin spoke in such a contrived, rehearsed manner about being a hockey-mom and having a big family etc etc as if she's the only one of the two who could possibly connect on an emotional level with normal american families. I don't think she was expecting Biden to beat her at her own game so to speak. When he spoke about his family in response, it came across with such clear GENUINE emotion, I think it threw her off. And that's why she came across as unsympathetic.. She hadn't rehearsed for that. The only way she just about scraped through that whole debate was by repeating lines she'd memorized, and avoiding everything else, including answering key questions.

  7. #7    Off script and away from memorized lines Palin is hurting.
She said the US is at pre surge troop levels when the truth is we are 27,000 above that number. Why was she given a pass?
Why is the $300 monthly US payment to Sons of Iraq and unsurgents not being cited as a major reason for "surge success"?
She got a pass for using a Civil War general's name for the general in Afghanistan.
Using Reagan's "there you go again" along with the set up "say it ain't so Joe" and "Joe Sixpack" was cute, but not much beyond cute. This is not a local race, but the VP- one heartbeat away from POTUS. She put on a decent show, but is out of her league for national office.

  8. #8    Palin reminded me of Mary Hart on Entertainment Tonite: pasted on smile, canned responses, zero humanity

  10. #10    Totally agreed. I did not watch the debate, but I saw clips later. In particular, I saw the clip from CNN where Biden choked up over his family, and then Palin babbled her nonsense afterwards. It was fascinating watching the lines showing the reactions of the uncommitted voters at the bottom of the screen during that clip...during Biden's moment, both lines were almost at the top of the grid. The moment Palin opened her mouth and started reciting the gleeful talking points, both lines took an extreme nosedive downward. It was hilarious!

  11. #11    I watched the "debate" and came away sensing that Biden won. Palin showed she had a knack for memorization, and what rote answer with which to respond upon hearing the "keyword". So programmed was she to respond to key words like Pavlov's dog's salivating at the ringing of the bell, she insisted upon answering a question about Afghanistan EVEN THOUGH IT HADN'T BEEN ASKED! What I found to be really weird and about which no one has commented any place on the net that i have surfed is -- What the fark was the winking? I think I count at least 4 separate times that during her "answer"she gave this seductive wink! Like some bimbo in a bar. I thought she was going say something like,
"And, (wink) wouldja believe it, youse guys , I' not wearin' any panties! (wink) (wink)

BTW, I understand that Giuliani has been asking for Palin's "hand me downs."!

  12. #12    Does she even know what an ACHILLES HEEL is? She refused to answer that one like the many times she just avoided the topic and rambled about her memorizations.

  13. #13    Maybe I'm just too skeptical about Ms. Palin's motivations--nah, that can't be it. What I've been pondering since the debate, among other things, is this: At the debate's outset, Palin asked Biden if she could call him Joe. Then she proceeded to not call him by name...except once. That's when she delivered one of her straight-from-the-factory lines: "Say it ain't so, Joe..." Was Palin's initial request made simply for the purpose of setting up the later line? You betcha. (wink, wink).

  14. #14    Following Joan Walsh: Not only did her inhumane and robotic response to Biden's tragedy unmask this heartless woman, let us not forget Palin forcing Wasilla rape victims to pay for their forensic exams. With her sexist winks amidst her hypocritical complaints of sexism in the media, Palin is an anti-feminist, despite her protestations to the contrary.

Watch out America: A newly-minted Reagan with lipstick who likewise loves it when the red light of the TV camera goes on has been loosed in the land. At a spry 44, she is eyeing the top spot for 2012 following her current presentation to the public during her improbable campaign. Palin will be around for a long time, and our job must be to continue to discredit and dismantle her burgeoning political career. If McCain loses, Palin will inherit the mantle of the Republican party . . .

  15. #15    WINKY WINKY Sarah..... here is where you blew it:
In the lap of your husband's business partner... it is all over the net... and all over his lap... SIN AND GOD SEES

What else----ANNOUNCING YOUR NEW ATTACK PLAN just when your TAX records have hit the stands... MILLIONAIRE 15% PAYER

What else--- NOBODY is fooled with the folksy fucked-a-moose stories you have... all you had were SMART GLASSES, then you had to spoil it all, by opening your mouth, AND SPEAKING

Tell the OLD WHITE GUY it's time to go home and take a nap, the nooner is off, you gotta get back to alaska and slop the kids

  16. #16    gbear, hopefully, when Palin comes draging her phoney a$$ back up here to Alaska, she will be faced with her little "open and transparent" Troopergate SNAFU. And if the Texan/McCain/Rovian legal ( illegal? ) team of lawyers that are here in Ak. don't somehow blindside us on this issue we'll never have to suffer listening to this woman again.
