1. #1    The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy. The neo-cons are counting on such a blockade launching a war with Iran.

2. #2    The large and very advanced nature of the US Naval warships is not only directed at Iran. There is a great fear that Russia and China may oppose the naval and air/land blockade of Iran. If Russian and perhaps Chinese naval warships escort commercial tankers to Iran in violation of the blockade it could be the most dangerous at-sea confrontation since the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US and allied Navies, by front loading a Naval blockade force with very powerful guided missile warships and strike carriers is attempting to have a force so powerful that Russia and China will not be tempted to mess with. This is a most serious game of military brinkmanship with major nuclear armed powers that have profound objections to the neo-con grand strategy and to western control of all of the Middle East's oil supply.

They had their talks the night of the Olympic games. Russia gets the Georgia oil, and the US gets the Iran oil. China's happy because China just owns us, and all the oil in Africa they want.

12. #12    That may be a correct interpretation, but I tend to doubt it. I don't think Russia would make that deal. Iran is too important to Russia. I think what's really going on is that Georgia is a hot war between Russia and the US and Iran will be a hotter one. The fundemental issue, deeper than oil and gas, is US attempts at encirclement and US penetration into Central Asia.
    
    And I don't think China will be happy about the US siezing the oil and gas in Iran it needs, or about further US military penetration into Central Europe. Follks forget that Germany and the US were economically tight as thieves prior to WW2. Realpolik only works (in a manner of speaking) when it's not pushed too far. But few can resist pushing it too far.
    
    No doubt Bush is convincing himself that he's still looking into Putin's soul. No doubt Putin wants the retard (colloquially speaking) to think that.

13. #13    Prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the Americans had imposed an oil embargo on Japan. An American cruiser squadron sailed in Japan's inland waters and the Pacific Fleet changed is home base from San Diego to Hawaii. Each of these acts was designed to provake Japan into attacking the USA. It worked. Now remember how the war against Japan ended. What is happening now is simply history repeating itself, with the same horrific outcome staring us in the face.

15. #15    Except for two things. Japan had already embarked on a course of war. Iran hasn't done that. And two, the US won WW2. Will it win WW3? Blitzkrieg only gets you so far. We've got the greatest military in history when it comes to Blitzkrieg. We make the Germans look like pushovers. But will our energy and manufacturing base sustain a world war, and will the people really agree to it? Do Americans really and truly want that? Part of Hitler's problem, as he himself accurately said as his death approached, the German people had (as he put it) let him down. The truth was, they never wanted what he wanted.
