The Nuclear Expert Who Never Was - Scott Ritter

As a former U.N. weapons inspector, Scott Ritter knows a thing or two about nuclear threats around the world. So when so-called “experts” go on T.V. to help make the case for war with Iran, it gets his attention.

  1. #1    I've been very disturbed by the credibility the IAEA seems to be granting that laptop. As I understand it, it came from the US orginally, which alone would seem to make it suspect (Niger Yellowcake documents), and on top of that, the IAEA investigator, Ollie (I can't remember his last name) has made what seems to me the highly dubious statement that the nuclear files on the computer could never have been downloaded from the web. That seems an awfully tall statement, especially considering that Ollie himself was involved in the incident where it was found that the Bush administration had put some of Saddam's alleged nuke documents and designs on the internet. That's at least one precedent for potentially related documents being in a downloadable situation, it seems to me.

It strikes me that there is something terribly familiar about what seems to be a process in which weak or misleading or possibly even false information is being welded together into a brittle and prickly mass of seeming inevitabilty.

  2. #2    I remember in the late 90's when Scott Ritter was the reason for the U.S. pulling all inspectors out of Iraq prior to more bombing by the Clinton administration. At the time he was being accused of working for the CIA and was the only inspector the Iraqi's had a problem with. Ritter vehemently and repeatedly denied this charge at the time. Now he admits to having worked for the CIA but is a progressive leftist hero of sorts. I appreciate his efforts that he has made to stop the war since his involvement in its perpetuation, but I question his overall sincerity and his former complicity. Am I the only one who remembers this or believes that he should not get a free pass just because of his johnny-come-lately anti-war work?

  3. #3    Like a cave man with one phone. It is so plummeting when people are so busy making ends meet, they can’t get involved; before it is too late.

  4. #4    Just FYI...

Dr. Frank Von Hippel, professor of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, wrote this in defense of David Albright (via Arms Control Wonk, link at bottom):

    A Nuclear Expert Who Is

Scott Ritter’s attack on David Albright, “The Nuclear Expert Who Never Was,” suggests that only those who have spent years on the “inside” or have some other official credential are true experts. He is wrong.

Ritter is correct that Albright’s expertise does not stem from either his participation in IAEA inspections or a PhD in nuclear physics. You can’t get the kind of expertise that Albright has developed that easily. Albright started to work on nuclear-proli...
