Hartmann: It’s an ‘Occupation’ Not a ‘War’

Wars end in victory or surrender. Occupations end with withdrawals. Thom Hartmann says that until the media and the Democrats stop calling the invasion and occupation of Iraq a "war," McCain et al can make the powerful argument that withdrawal would mean "surrendering to al Qaeda."

  1. #1    That fine semantic distinction is lost on the people getting their doors kicked in by combat infantry patrols, getting the walls of their houses turned to powder by the DU rounds from the 25mm chain guns on the Bradleys, those people under the missiles and bombs from AF and Navy air strikes, etc.

  5. #5    Jeffrey Archer

Four days before the planned date of the coup, £74,000 was deposited in Mann's account by one JH Archer. Lord Archer categorically denied any involvement in the coup, and was not accused of wrongdoing.

  8. #8    Hartmann is Correct!

Invasion, Occupation, War, are not so subtle distinctions in the WAR OF WORDS - the Propaganda war.

True, the distinction will be lost on someone whose door has been kicked in and had their family murdered but these words are not intended for the victims of these actions.

They are intended for a different audience. Those who support and finance these actions. The distinction
provides comfort to the ignorant, and an out for the willfully ignorant.

  9. #9    Declare victory and withdraw. BUT, the military bases and our "embassy" are problematic. The whole of the middle east is so messed up that nothing short of a trial for reparations will resolve anything. I'd like to see "W" and his cadre in the dock at the Hague.

  11. #11    The "War Powers" Act makes the distinction moot, because the vote for the invasion was done under that Act, which gives away Congress' responsibility for "declaring war" under the Constitution.

I still call it "the occupation and destruction of Iraq" rather than a "war," because I believe the "War Powers" Act to be unconstitutional. However, the Supremes say no.

Of course, the Supremes gave the current corrupt, criminal president his job, so what do they know?

  13. #13    the u.s political/military machine is the worlds largest terrorist organisation, which means that the vast majority of u.s senate/house members are war criminals. I wouldn't shake the hands of anyone of them,( excluding dennis kucinich & ron paul ) because if I did then I'd have to wash my hands :-(.. I can think of more than a few that I'd like to spit on & give the finger too, however :-)

  15. #15    Wonder if the Dem leadership and frontrunners would agree with Martin Luther King that the greatest purveyor of violence on the planet is the US government? If they did agree with him, and with most of his peace and justice advocacy over the last three years of his life, I'd consider voting for them. Since they don't, there is no chance of them getting my vote.
