George McGovern: Why I Believe Bush Must Go

George McGovern writes: "Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses. They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world. These are truly 'high crimes and misdemeanors,' to use the constitutional standard."

  1. #1    IT IS TIME TO STOP WRITING AND TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT AND GET IT GOING

  2. #2    impeachment will not put them in prison...they need to be charged with crimes against humanity...

  3. #3    I fully agree with both above comments. It is high time to act. Impeach now and sue them both in court and FIND THEM GUILTY and PUT THEM in jail till Hell freezes over. NOW, otherwise we will definitely no longer believe in the United States.

  4. #4    It's too late now. Gore should have challenged the 2000 debacle. Where was the protest then!? Now we don't have an opposition party or any effective means of impeachment. It's called fascism and nobody's going to do a fucking thing about it because Americans are a sorry bunch of pussies.

  5. #5    They (dumbya/darth-cheney) looted the treasury, set the world afire, tortured, lied, schemed, illegally spy on Americans (you know it is not for the stated purposes), committed treason, endangered millions of lives, obstructed justice, illegal power grabs - just to mention a few offenses. And will walk away far more obscenely rich than before - provided they even leave their "offices" willingly. They have the collective testicles of congress on a necklace, flip the bird to the world (decent Americans included) yet not one soul with the power to stop them have bothered to lift a finger to stop it.

How long would Bill Clinton (the last legally elected President of the United States) have lasted had he done the same?

  6. #6    Wait a minute, Tim - none of us knew just how hideously bad Bush et al. were going to be in 2000. We all had our suspicions, and our low expectations of Bush-Cheney in 2000. So many of us thought the 2000 election was stolen. So many thought Bush-Cheney would be pro-biz and anti-The People. But not even the most creative among us could ever have imagined just how hideously bad Bush has turned out to be.

So while I too want Bush-Cheney imprisoned yesterday, we have to realize that it takes a loooonnnnggg time to move 300 million people in ANY direction, even one as clearly desirable as impeachment/imprisonment, and maybe even execution. If that were not true, we wouldn't still have Bush et al. We'd have gotten rid of them in 2004.

    Think it over.

  7. #7    The 2000 time line aside, I'm more with Tim. I've figured for years that the American character can be summed up as "bullies". Basically, pussies with a thin, hard shell.

We've lost the congress. Now it's up to the people. As long as we aren't walking off our jobs to clog the streets of the D.C. Mall and the capitols of every state to demand justice, the rule of law, election reform and some services back for our tax dollars corporate fascism will continuing doing whatever it wants. Writing stern letters to our congressmen? Um hum. "Getting involved in politics to grow change from the grass roots!" Yeah, that'll get Kucinich nominated, much less elected. Lots of luck using the tactics of business as usual to cut out this cancer. I say affect the economy. Then government takes notice. And that means something like the national strikes other countries have.

  8. #8    None of us knew? I knew how hideously bad they were going to be. I had my going to jail clothes on, because I was convinced that Americans wouldn't stand for five whores on the supreme court nullifying democracy. It didn't take a looooonnnggg time for Americans to concede to this predictable outcome.

  9. #9    "Many times in recent years, I have recalled Jefferson's observation: "Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.""
RichMiles, you are substantialy right, but some of US did forsee fascism and attrocity in 2000. If you'd been following the rise of the NeoCons from the Reagan Era and noticed who was involved in Bush/Cheney2000(Elliot Abrams, John Bolton and John Negroponte for three), followed the trajectory to it's logical end, these things were apparent and we haven't gotten all the way to the end, either. They still have a year to suspend (what's left of) the Constitution and install their permanent control.
Impeachment, as much as we could wish,...

  10. #10    If Bush makes it to the end of his second term, we can still undo every law his two terms have imposed during the eight years of his dictatorial rule. Genuine and honest investigations by independent special procecutors WILL uncover the truth of three Republican-stolen elections. Only one stolen election means that his presidency is illegitimate. Everything done by an illegitimate regime can be declared null and void, and we can return the US to the status of its legal government just prior to their illegal coup. This should include seizing all money paid to Bush, Cheney and Rove during their eight years, including all profits earned by their profiteering from their military adventuring and their looting of the US Treasury. All of their assets should be seized and returned to the US Treasury, their Secret Service protection should be rescinded, and they should be left answerable to any and all civil lawsuits filed by anyone who was damaged by their criminal behavior.

  11. #11    I would like to agree with ursus that this can be repaired, legally, after their time is up, but it can't be done. Every agency has been peopled with planted saboteurs and inaction has encouraged the fascists to sew up all the loose ends in the coming months, if there are any loose ends or laws left unrescinded.

  12. #12    "...Every agency has been peopled with planted saboteurs ..." and looted to boot.
I'd also like to believe that you(ursus_orribilus) are not completely wrong, that we can salvage what's left when and if they leave the WH. But to expand TimH's point a bit, it'll take a generation to repair some of the damage they've done domesticaly and within the government and some of the damage we've suffered worldwide can never be undone.

  15. #15    Bush and Dick should have been impeached the moment they violated their oath, to uphold the constitution and rule of law! The moment they committed their first crime! They have broken the law so many times since then that it's hard to determine which crime to go after them for. If they ever do get impeached and convicted, If they have to do prison time, I'd be inclined to break a federal law, and be thrown into prison, just so I could get my hands on these two crooks! Of course, if they ever did have to do time, I'd probably have to wait in line to get to them. Bush, and his entire administration are the worst scum I have ever seen in my lifetime, and I'm 72.
