Juan Cole: Musharraf Plans To Be Dictator For Life

Musharraf appears to have concluded that the Supreme Court would rule against him, thus his coup-within-a-coup, which at last throws off the tattered facade of democratic institutions and reveals the naked military tyranny underneath. Pitifully, Musharraf explained that he had to make the coup in order to ensure the transition to democracy he says he began 8 years ago. Apparently the "transition" (i.e. Musharraf's dictatorship) will last for the rest of his life.

  2. #2    That is a difference between a bad dictator (Iran, North Korea, Cuba etc) and a good one (Musharaf, Mubarak, Ghadafi, King Abdullah).

Maybe this is something for George to learn from, another 8 year and his family will go into history as the founding fathers of "Kingdom of America"

  3. #3    Another one that doesn't know what democracy is, just like our Thugs. America couldn't dominate the rest of the world if they were democracies, their people would refuse to go along.
When we've expanded our empire, it's been by backing tyrants that dictate to their subjects how it will be. Somoza, Marcos, Trujillo, The Shah of Iran, Sharon, the list is nearly endless.
The phrase goes "he may be a sonofab!tch, but he's OUR sonofab!tch".
Farhad, I don't think the American Empire will last another decade, Bush has ripped the cover off and now, the naked face of dominance is showing through. Allies, like Europe, that once thought that they were members of our court are realizing that they are being played to our advantage and would be hung out to dry if it suits US. If anything, Bush will be remembered as destroying America's international reputation and hegemony (not to mention the domestic destruction).

  4. #4    OH, Yes !
The fear factor is upon us !!
This goes back to when Bush said Osama didn't like our freedoms ...
The relative meaning to all this is that Pakistan is our ally in the
Middle East.. does anyone know why ??
Somewhat like China is our economic polluting partner ...

  5. #5    Musharref is a SELF-AGRANDISSING, FASCIST THUG, just like BUSH-CHENEY. He's NEVER been a DEMOCRAT as His only objective has been to ENRICH himself and EXPAND his power. DOES THAT SOUND LIKE ANOTHER WELL KNOWN 'LEADER'?

  8. #8    remember the british "office" with ricky gervais? they brought it to the united states, dumbed it down, re-cast it, and threw it on the air. that's what's about to happen with the "president musharraf power hour".

granted, the american "office" evolved into something good. this show won't believe in evolution.
