Arizona sheriff not relenting after court ruling

Arpaio, a 78-year-old ex-federal drug agent who fashions himself as a modern-day John Wayne, launched his latest sweep Thursday afternoon, sending about 200 sheriff's deputies and trained volunteers out across metro Phoenix to look for traffic violators who may be here illegally. Deputy Bob Dalton and volunteer Heath Kowacz spotted a driver with a cracked windshield in a poor Phoenix neighborhood near a busy freeway. Dalton triggered the red and blue police lights and pulled over 28-year-old Alfredo Salas, who was born in Mexico but has lived in Phoenix with a resident alien card since 1993.

    Does that bother anyone?

  2. #2    what bothers me is the push for amnesty for illegal immigrants.

until the cudgel of illegal immigration is dealt with American workers pay scales will continue to be at the mercy of corporations who flaut the law and continue hiring illegal workers to under cut the wages American workers need to survive.

Any argument outside of that only allows the continuance of illegal workers taking jobs Americans "will" do.

  3. #3    I saw on the news last night that "John Wayne" had a reported 2,000 "trained" volunteers, many with weapons. Today it's the Hispanics, tomorrow it will be the Arabs, next week anyone who isn't a christian or jew will be targets.

Looking forward to seeing desparate white boys and girls working in the lettuce fields of Arizona.

  4. #4    Bluefin is right. The Hispanics do work that no white American will do, with pay that no white American would accept.

  5. #5    bluefin is wrong. I am an American who has and is currently applying for jobs Americans won't do.

I have seen first hand the decimation in wages for construction workers in Florida even prior to the recession thanks entirely to illegal immigrants who will work for half the money American workers were getting.

If you spend 20 years working up the wage ladder to have it destroyed in a few years by a huge influx of illegal workers you get to feeling like maybe they should enforce the laws concerning illegal immigration.

But for some reason progressive sites that claim to be for the American working public want to fight tooth and nail against any form of enforcement of illegal immigrati...

  6. #6    Ixinxs: Sorry to hear of your economic plight. As you know, it is against the law for your US employer to hire illegals in the first place, but what US corporation or local business cares about laws when there is no enforcement of these laws. You have a choise: turn the company in for hiring illegals (you'll probably be shot), work for lower wages or get the hell out of Flordia.

There are three US state with unemployment below 5%: North and South Dakota and Nebraska. Pack your car.

This is the best argument FOR amnesty and opening up the workplace for all workers, legally. If there's no advantage to hiring "illegals", that is if they have to be paid, insured and taxed the same as citzens, the Corporations wouldn't have that cudgel. Level the playing field up not down.
You want to do something to protect "Good American Jobs"? Rewrite our trade agreements with Latin America and Asia so that their factories, where our goods are being made, have to conform to US standards for Environment, Workplace Safety and treatment of their workforce including, at the bare minimum, our minimum wage.
Make it so there's no advantage to our Corporations outsourcing and offshoring.

  8. #8    I am all for ditching the free trade agreements.

But you are still missing one of the prongs. Outsourcing and offshoring are only part. Another part is insourcing. For the normal labor worker this means illegal immigrants. For techies this would mean working for years to get your degrees, then staying on top of all current trends, just to have your employer hire workers from India for example at half the salary they are willing to pay you.

Insourcing of workers is just as much at fault as outsourcing any day of the week. They are part and parcel of the illusion America can compete globally without anyone having to take a pay cut or live in a grass shack.

Once again I am willing to f...
