it's unfortunate the Representative Weiner will not seek a vote for single payer. Even if a vote where taken, it would not pass. Our system is too corrupt and the influence of insurance company money is too pervasive. There is only one way to fix our government. We must adopt 100% Public Financing of ALL elections.

If people want a single payer health plan; support public financing.
If people want reform of Wall Street and the Banking Industry; support public financing.
If people want a less adventurous military; support public financing.

Most of what ills this country can be cured by getting the money out of elections. It's really that simple. The talking heads never bring up public financing because it is an issue that we the people left, right, middle can and will unite around. Talk to your GOP friends, explain to them the need for public financing. Tell them that their ideas should rest on their merit, not on how much money can be given in support or against. The time is now. Take to the streets! Demand Public Financing!

We have the best democracy that money can buy; as it turns out, money can't buy a very good democracy.

Hell, Dennis. It's just a fine American tradition! There's enough excessive profit in health care that it could easily take the place of the military/industrial complex if the government unquestioningly paid the health bills of everybody like they pay $1000 for toilet seats to the war machine. But the military/industrial complex got to the money trough first.

It's an interesting idea though. Let's reverse the roles. Let's take the money we spend on war and funnel it to health care. It will protect us better and guarantee most of us live longer than the war machine. If some Americans want a war, they can pay out of pocket.

Let's remember Clinton left that selfish kid, G.W. Bush a half trillion surplus which he quickly squandered by giving huge tax breaks to those who needed it least. Let's remember Bush stampeded a blind Congress into 2 unnecessary wars using cherry picked data and outright lies. Both wars fought on supplementary budgets which means they are debts that some future President will have to worry about paying.
I have one question, where was the media and the Congress in this rush to war? Just think what all that money could have done to health care for us?

If you get a chance, talk to someone who was in Malabo when the attempted coup took place. Oh, I guess I can just talk to myself, since I was there at the time. The day after the mercenaries were arrested at the airport, everyone in town knew that Thatcher and Calil were behind it. Strange how those mercenaries were so willing to talk so quickly. I'm sure it was a very Gitmo-Bagram kind of experience for them.

It was uncomfortable being a foreigner in the country in those days. Everyone on the street was harassed by the police, even more than usual. I made a point of being in the hotel by sundown and not going out again until morning. The flight out of Malabo was a welcome relief.

Excellent question, matt. I don't think the point has ever been to REALLY change things, matt. As much as we would all like to believe that. If we had really wanted change everyone would have voted Kucinich in regardless to the monied interests and the media. But, no, we went along with the media circus even when we knew that Mr. K was not in the corporate pockets.

So, now that we have to live through what we voted in, I agree with you that we should not belly-ache about it.

HOWEVER,

That does not say that this is not the time and OPPORTUNITY to become so well-informed that we, the sheeple, do not get tricked again into being sheeple. So, this is how we become informed. By using forums like this. Do you think the ones we call the "intellectuals" like the fact that they are dealing with well-informed people. Well, they do not. Otherwise they would not be attacking the schools by dumbing down education and providing us with poor quality teachers and educational systems. This is why liberal arts was taken out of the common folks education some time ago. However, in other countries, it is still a part of the curriculum. WHY? B/c liberal arts is where one has to critically think, evaluate, and analyze thought. Which not all of us can do. We just accept what is written, even if we know it can't be true, solely b/c the govt says it is true.

Well, we are learning, matt. Don't knock us for that. But like you said. To come to grips with it, to the point where we understand that we are going to have to do something about it, or we will be hanging by our feet waiting for the next scheme to pull more money out of our pockets while gutting our entrails.

So, this first process of becoming informed is important. And will continue to be important. To understand the many ways they have of coming at us and keeping each other informed. Double speak or news speak, whatever you want to call it has to be interpreted and understood. B/c things are being said that are not meant. And we won't understand the true meaning unless we know how to interpret this new language. Everyone that is "in-the-know, the self-appointed pundits, the many opinionated economists, etc all know. We don't. We depend on them to tell us. That all has to change. And that is a fairly easy one.

The final step is to really get up the nerve to DO something about it. So, don't give up on the process yet, matt. We are just at the first stage.

The US has been what Gore Vidal a 'National Security State' since the Truman admin. Basically --we've been at war since that time. The study addresses the long term effect upon an economy in a state of war. The result --as predicted --is the CONTRACTION (in the economic sense of the term) as a result of a militarism that DOES NOT stimulate but in the short term and, in fact, CONTRACTS the economy in the long term. We livin' it!

This study is detailed enough and is consistent with everything Keynes ever said. Simplistically, the US --rather than blowing up tanks --would have been better off burying the same amt of money in a landfill and letting 'private enterprise' dig it up.

There's a lot of deliberate distraction going on. Here's the real story.

A soldier kept ranting to his superiors about how very wrong the IraqAfPak war is. Not just any soldier but a known Muslim which, for the US military, automatically means an unofficial alert level of screaming bright red. ...

... And the US military did nothing. The only way this could possibly happen is if this was a routine occurrence - if the reports we hear from vets of massive discontent in the US military are true.

Think about it. I guess most people would, however reluctantly, put their lives on the line to defend their country. But these guys have been there. Been there far too many times. They know that the reason they are there is to boost the war profiteers, the oil and gas profiteers, and the CIA's drug profiteers. Are they reluctant? Reluctant ain't the half of it. Except for a small percentage that still think war is a video game, the serving US military (not the toy generals in the Pentagon) is very very very unhappy that their lives are being sold for profit.

What's the point anymore?

All we do is write our outrage, call senators and congresspersons who've long ago stopped being concerned about constituents unless they're corporations or billionaires, and hope that things will somehow be different with each situation that comes up. The classic definition of insanity cited by Einstein and heard in millions of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings - doing the same thing and expecting different results. Only this last time they really tricked us, right? Throw a black man into the mix. Except he isn't really black, is he? He's $100 bill green and corrupt through and through.

Time for a revolution, I agree with that wingnut Bachmann on that. Time to get rid of corporate personhood, impeach a shitload of judges (including two of the three most recent supreme court justices), and institute a very precise version of term limits IN ADDITION TO revising the health care provisions for members of congress and the terms of the pensions they receive. You can bet your ass that congressional pensions will never be bankrupted or even threatened in any way.

This system is bankrupt and it's time for radical, revolutionary, and violent, if necessary, change. The little guy is getting it right up the poop chute again with no KY and I've had enough of listening to everyone wring their hands over it without calling for some elemental root and branch change.

@#5 - This information comes from the IAEA and is probably true. However a conventional explosive test doesn't mean much as Iran doesn't have any weapons-grade uranium.

I don't actually know whether Iran has bought any yellowcake from Niger. Since Iran has it's own uranium mine it probably did not. In any event the question is irrelevant as we already know that Iran has reactor-grade uranium. It just doesn't have weapons-grade uranium.

The problem in the Middle East is still the nuclear armed terrorist state that keeps attacking its neighbors. Not Iran.
